What is the Oxford Method?

Many students at Oxford University are amused and confused at first by tutorials. They are asked to present their week's work in the form of an essay which is read out in the rooms of their college tutor. It is then gone into in some detail and probing questions are asked to ascertain the depth and breadth of the student's understanding of the subject.
 
For most people, such a learning experience is very stressful but extremely valuable as the personal difficulties of the student are gone into in great detail and much progress is made. The tutor is supportive, constructive and highly focussed on individual needs.
 
In Hong Kong, this approach is usually totally absent from learning. Mass education, even at international schools, comprises classroom experiences, group work, work sheets, textbooks and individual problems are rarely gone into.
